  Educated privately by Dominican Friars. International tour manager with US companies (1968). Public Relations Executive (1973), Parliamentary and political consultant, London (1977). Established own public affairs consultancy in Westminster (1983). Member of the European Parliament (since 1984) Set up the €150 million European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) (1992) Leader of the Conservatives (1997 - 2001) Member of European Parliament Foreign Affairs committee (AFET) (1990 - 2004) Vice-President of the European Parliament since 2004. Elected as Parliament's first ever independent Vice-President (2009). Sits as ALDE Vice-President since 2012. Chairman of the Delegation to the EEA Joint Parliamentary Committee (1999-2002).
